cellulite

Cellulite is the lumpy substance resembling cottage cheese that is commonly found on the thighs, stomach, and butt.As fat cells enlarge, they push up against the skin. Tough, long connective cords pull down. This creates an uneven surface or dimpling, often referred to as cellulite. You can describe it as the dimpled appearance of skin caused by fat deposits that are just below the surface of the skin. It generally appears on skin in the abdomen, lower limbs, and pelvic region, and it usually occurs after puberty.

You can check to see if you have cellulite by pinching the skin around your upper thigh. If it looks a bit lumpy, you probably have it. And if you do have cellulite, you’re definitely not alone  Most girls and women and some men have.

Cellulite Causes

The causes of cellulite are poorly understood, and may involve changes in metabolism and physiology such as gender specific dimorphic skin architecture, alteration of connective tissue structure, vascular changes and inflammatory processes.

Hormonal Factors

Hormones play a dominant role in the formation of cellulite and . Estrogen may be the important hormone and initiate and aggravate cellulite. However, there has been no reliable clinical evidence to support such a claim. Other hormones including insulin, the catecholamines adrenaline and noradrenaline, thyroid hormones, and prolactin are all believed to participate in the development of cellulite.

Predisposing Factors

Several genetic factors have been shown to affect the development of cellulite. Gender, race, bio type, a hormone receptor allele that determines the receptor number and sensitivity, distribution of subcutaneous fat, and predisposition to circulatory insufficiency have all been shown to contribute to cellulite.

Diet

Dieting has shown to have variable effects on improving or worsening the appearance of cellulite.

Lifestyle

A high stress lifestyle will cause an increase in the level of catecholamines, which have also been associated with the evolution of cellulite.

Clothing

Underwear with tight elastic across the buttocks  may contribute to the formation of cellulite.

Cellulite Grades

Grade 1
No clinical symptoms, but histopathology detects underlying anatomical changes, there may be increased thickness of the areolar layer and increased capillary permeability.

Grade 2
The skin shows pallor, lower temperature, and decreased elasticity after compression or muscular contraction. There is no visible “orange peel” roughness to the skin.

Grade 3

Visible “orange peel” roughness to the skin is visible at rest. This is the “canonical” grade of cellulite. Thin granulations in the deep levels of the skin can be detected by palpitation. All Grade 2 signs are present, with further anatomical changes are detectable by histopathology.

Grade 4
All Grade 3 symptoms are present, with more visible, palpable, and painful lumps present which adhere to deep structures in the skin. The skin has a noticeable dimpled, wavy appearance. Additional histopathologic changes are detected.
